The visit to the excavations can take from two hours to a whole day, depending on time at your disposal. We can start from Porta Marina or Theater area, pass through Suburban baths or visit Triangular Forum and Temple of Isis, then reach the area of Forum that, since its origins, was the political, economic and commercial center of city life.
Leading east you can cross lower “decumano”, or Via dell’Abbondanza, one of the most important streets of Pompeii. In addition to Stabia thermal baths and Lupanare, located in a nearby alley, you can find many houses and shops, including Casa del Criptoportico and Casa and Thermopolium of Vetutius Placidus.
From Forum you can continue north-west to visit Foro thermal baths, Casa del Fauno and Casa dei Vettii, go through Porta Ercolano to reach Villa dei Misteri, with marvelous frescoes in second style, made during 1st century BC.
There are many more houses and shops to visit (some of them aren’t open to public), making the choice very difficult: a guided tour is the most reasonable way to admire the most important places, residences or recently restored and reopened marvels, without wasting time, and listening stories and anecdotes about life in Pompeii.
