You cannot spend your holiday in South Italy without visiting the ancient city of Pompeii, one of the most fascinating archaeological sites of the world, and then climbing up to the top of Mount Vesuvius’ crater to enjoy a splendid view of entire gulf of Naples.
Pompeii was buried by devastating eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. For many centuries the city has been buried under a thick layer of ashes and lapilli, which preserved houses, theaters, shops, temples, frescoes, mosaics and many more buildings. That’s why Pompeii is a unique place where you can experience inhabitants’ daily life a few hours before their terrible end, walking along the cobbled streets of basalt.
Tour starts with a visit across this ancient city from Porta Marina or Theater area, passing through suburban baths or visiting Triangular Forum and Temple of Isis, then reach the area of Forum that, since its origins, was political, economic and religious center of city life. Leading east you can cross lower decumanus, or Via dell’Abbondanza, one of most crowded and important streets of Pompeii. After Stabiane thermal baths and Lupanare, located in a nearby alley, you can find many houses and shops, including Casa del Criptoportico and Casa and Thermopolium of Vetutius Placidus, just to name some.
During lunch break you can enjoy a tasty Neapolitan pizza or some local food and a glass of good Vesuvian wine.
Our day continues with the ascent to Vesuvius, along a road full of orchards, vineyards, pine forests, robinias and brooms, that leads up to 1000 meters.
A walk of an hour or more between volcanic rocks and charming landscapes will help discover history of volcano and its eruptions, due to many lava flows taking place over the centuries. Summit of the crater, 1281 meters high, is exciting and unique, while panorama sweeps over Gulf of Naples, Sorrento Peninsula and Capri to the East and to Procida, Ischia and Capo Miseno to the West.
