Description

Trekking tour in Valle delle Ferriere

Valle delle Ferriere is a unique place protected by Lattari Mountains, in the heart of Amalfi Coast. This is an area rich in vegetation, waterfalls and streams, which create cool environment even summertime. It’s an excellent place for trekking fans who love colors and scents of Mediterranean scrub.

This valley is famous thanks to travelers of Grand Tour who, during 19th  century, enhanced natural beauties of this romantic landscape, made more interesting by ancient factories making handmade paper and iron. In the innermost part of Valley, you can find an Oriented Nature Reserve where, thanks to a particular microclimate, very rare plants can strive, such as pteris aquilina and woodwardia radicans thermophilic ferns, known by botanists since the 18th century.

Tour details:

You can easily reach Valle delle Ferriere walking from Amalfi or from the village of Pontone, that is only a few miles away. There are at least three alternative paths leading to valley and starting from Ravello, Pogerola or even from distant Agerola, longer routes that cross small villages located in highest part of Amalfi Coast.

We’ll discover a system of terracing built over the centuries that allowed people living here to cultivate vine, olive and typical sfusato Amalfitano lemon, creating a unique landscape recognized as a World Heritage by UNESCO.

Trail coming from Agerola crosses chestnut groves and mixed deciduous woods, runs along ridges with breathtaking views of Coast and green valleys until you get to a heap of stone called Acquolella springs, below which you can see Valle delle Ferriere.

We’ll make a little break to quench our thirst and continue descending to a fork in Tavernate. Following path to the right we can reach Pogerola, but going left we can reach a singular waterfall and ruins of ancient Ferriera. We’ll find a junction once again: a path leads to Pontone to the left, while going down to the right we can reach lower part of valley, that features evocative ruins of ancient paper mills, leading to Amalfi.
